Modern Fiction Writers and their Singer/Songwriter Equivalents

Six pairings that demand to be considered, as decided upon by E while doing a Tracy Anderson arm workout in bed.

Behold the magic that awaits.

Behold the magic that awaits.

Writer:

George Saunders

Singer/Songwriter Equivalent:

Phoenix

Why?

Much like Phoenix, George is the coolest guy in the room. Though his stories feel effortless and easy to read, they’re actually the result of hours and hours of incredibly detailed and intricate work. So goes the M.O. of Thomas Mars and friends in their jam sessions.

Writer:

Alice Munro

SINGER/SONGWRITER EQUIVALENT:

Beyoncé

Why?

Seriously? These ladies are the queens of everything. Nobody else can even approach them in terms of scope. All of the kingdoms are theirs.

Writer:

Karen Russell

SINGER/SONGWRITER EQUIVALENT:

Father John Misty

Why?

These two fell from branches of the same tree in the mystical fairy forest. Both know how to come at the world from a totally bizarre perspective that seems like it would make absolutely no sense, but then you encounter it and realize it makes all of the sense. Someone please go listen to I Love You, Honeybear while reading Vampires in the Lemon Grove.

Writer:

Lorrie Moore

SINGER/SONGWRITER EQUIVALENT:

Haim

Why?

As I’ve said before of Moore on this blog, she knows women better than we know ourselves. I believe the same can be said of Haim. The work of these ladies makes me feel emboldened in my womanhood and inspired to don a power blazer and claim my rightful place amongst my peers in a male-dominated work environment.

Writer:

Dave Eggers

SINGER/SONGWRITER EQUIVALENT:

Taylor Swift

Why?

Both Dave and Taylor demonstrate through their philanthropism that they know it’s about a lot more than the work on the page/stage. Each has also built an army of likeminded supporters, Dave through his McSweeney’s and Taylor through her power networking. I therefore do not want to live in a world in which these two forces are not in harmony.

WRITER:

Tom Perrotta

SINGER/SONGWRITER EQUIVALENT:

Frank Turner

Why?

Both Perrotta and Turner are guys who live life on the inside, facing outwards. They know what it’s like to look suburban surrender in the eye in all its mundane and landscaped glory and squarely face it down. I also feel the characters in Perrotta’s Little Children would have fully listened to Turner’s Photosynthesis in college had it existed.

What does everyone think? Alice Munro is Beyoncé, no? And Saunders is absolutely Phoenix.
